According to the statistics, Air Freight was the most successful segment of the logistics industry over the first six months of 2010. Air Freight shipments increased 38% during that time, while Ocean Freight forwarding was up just 13%. Transport Intelligence reports global boost in freight volumes in 2010 after the previous year, which was marked by a 23% decrease. A new federal regulation requiring screening all freight flying on passenger aircrafts went into effect in 2010. More than 95% of forwarders noted no problems with this regulation within the first week of its implementation.
There are two kinds of Air Freight; the Less-Than-Truckload and the Truckload freight. The former features items weighting less than 15,000 pounds with the up to 28 inches in height, the latter includes items weighting up to 43,000 pounds with the length up to 53 inches. It is more expensive to ship the Less-Than-Truckload cargo because it does not use transportation to its optimum capacity.
While dealing with this problem, freight brokers play an important role because they do business with many customers who ship different volumes of freight. It allows combining a few Less-Than-Truckload cargos and lowering their shipment costs. Freight brokers also get deals from shipping companies because of repeat business and because they provide customers for transportation returning to the original destination. Many companies favor working with freight brokers instead of dealing with the shipment companies directly.
